The New and Renewing Congregations Committee is sponsoring a mission trip to Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. It is an exciting opportunity to live out the blessed reality that we in this synod are indeed church together, striving alongside one another through all our joys, sorrows, and challenges!
Prince of Peace has been in a redevelopment process over the last several years, but they have encountered a challenging time in that process following the departure of their full-time pastor to attend to family concerns. The New and Renewing Congregations Committee decided that one way our synod could support Prince of Peace might be through some good old-fashioned Christian mission work! The irony of old-fashioned work is not lost on the New and Renewing Congregations Committee; yet, the renewal of ministry often involves the use of existing (and even ancient) tools for the Holy Spirit’s fresh purposes today!
We invite individuals or congregational groups (ages 6 and up) from our synod congregations to be part of this opportunity!
While the work projects will be finalized in August, we currently are anticipating interior painting, deep cleaning, repair work (baseboards, chairs, door handles, etc), landscaping, and carpentry work. If you have particular skills or experience in any of these areas, please indicate on your registration. Any implements or tools you can bring with you are encouraged.
During the weekend, we will participate in a service project benefiting the Mt. Vernon community. Updates will be posted as we get closer to the event.
The cost of registration is $25/individual or $20/person in a congregational group of three or more, with a maximum fee of $200. Meals included are Saturday evening, Sunday following worship and Sunday evening. Light breakfast items will be available. “God’s Work Our Hands” Shirts
We are asking participants to wear God’s Work Our Hands” shirts on Sunday. During registration you have the option to purchase shirts and indicate size. You will receive your shirt on the weekend and pay for your shirt on the weekend. $10 each.
When you register you will be given a choice of options for lodging. If you would like to have housing provided for you, you may select any of these options:
- host families
- floor space in the empty parsonage
- floor space in the church gym
These three options will be provided to you on a first-come first-served basis and will be limited; note that you will need to bring bedding unless you are placed with a host family. We will contact you in mid-August to let you know where you will be housed. If you will not be able to attend without housing being provided for you, please also check that box.
You may also select either of these options:
- Tent/rv parking on church grounds, but there are no hook-ups available
- Make your own arrangements (hotel, off-site camping, or your own home if you are within driving distance) These options are at your own expense.
