Upcoming Lutheran School of Theology Course

Upcoming Lutheran School of Theology Course

Dr. Mark Ruff, Professor of History at St. Louis University, will teach the course, THE COLD WAR AND A DIVIDED CHURCH: The Church’s Conflict Between Communist East and Capitalist West. How did American and European churches respond to the “Cold War?” How did religion become a weapon in this conflict between the Communist East and the capitalist West? Why did so many Christian leaders take sides in this protracted conflict? And why, now, have some church leaders who once condemned Communist Russia reversed their positions and begun to support Putin’s Russia? This course will begin with an overview of the Cold War and then turn to the role of religion. It will conclude by looking at the reversals taking place since 2000, the year of Putin’s ascent to the Russian presidency.

The course is sponsored by Lutheran School of Theology in St. Louis. It is offered five Tuesdays, Sept. 25, Oct. 2, 16, 23 and 30 from 7:00 to 9:30 p. m. at Christ Lutheran Church, 1 Selma Ave., St. Louis, Mo. 63119.

Tuition is $75 by Sept. 15 and $50 after that. Register for course number PD140 at www.lststl.org/courses, or by email to registrar@lststlorg, or by mail to Lutheran School of Theology, 475 E. Lockwood, St. Louis, MO 63119, or register by phone at 314-918-2556.
