The World of Paul

Seeking to Understand the Writings of Apostle Paul by Understanding his Times

The Apostle Paul has been subject to revisionism and criticism from the minute he began to embark on the mission to which he was called. But he was a man of place and time, and in order to understand Paul we must begin with some understanding of who he was in relation to his culture and environment. This course will attempt to explain how Paul’s cultural and societal environment impacted his understanding of his new found Christian faith and his calling as the “Apostle to the Gentiles.” What is Paul’s message to the church of his time, and what does he have to teach us today?

The instructor is the Rev. S. Blake Duncan, recently retired from full time ministry after having served as Pastor at Peace Lutheran Church in Steeleville, Illinois and Pastoral Head of Staff for the Wartburg Geographical Parish for the past nine years. Pastor Duncan continues to serve as the Dean of Education for the Synodically Authorized Ministry program for the Central/Southern Illinois Synod–ELCA.

The course is offered four Mondays, Oct. 1-22 from 7:00 to 9:30 p. m. at St. George’s Episcopal/St. Mark Lutheran Churches, 105 East “D” Street,

Belleville, Ill. 62220 Tuition is $65.

Register for course PD-141 at www.lststl.org/courses; by mail to Lutheran School of Theology, 475 E. Lockwood Ave., St. Louis, Mo 63119, by phone message at 314-918-2556, or by email to registrar@lststl.org.
