Draft of the Social Statement on Women and Justice
The “Draft of the Social Statement on Women and Justice” is now available in print or on the ELCA web for discussion and response. All responses will be received by the ELCA Task Force on Women and Justice: One in Christ will inform its work to prepare the proposed social statement that will be considered by the 2019 ELCA Churchwide Assembly.
The draft is based on the study the task force released in August of 2016 and the many responses from those who read and studied it. It represents the task force’s initial attempt to formulate a social statement and it is intended to encourage deliberation on what this church should say about the pressing issues of sexism and patriarchy. It expresses the best thinking of the task force to date, although not all task force members necessarily agree with every word in the document.
Congregational members are invited to respond to this document until September 30, 2018. Responses may be sent to the task force by using the online form at bit.ly/womenandjusticedraft or the form at the back of the printed booklet.
The draft is available for download from ELCA.org/womenandjustice. Printed copies may be ordered from the ELCA Online Resource Center either at ELCA.org/resources or by calling 800.638.3522, ext. 2996.
The draft on the website is accompanied by resources to assist you and all leaders in discussion and deliberation. These include a two-page summary for quick reference and a FQA regarding the process.
