Adult Faith Formation

Adult Faith Formation

Central/Southern Illinois Synod encourages all adults to engage in discipleship through faith-forming events. While much of this happens through local congregations, the Central/Southern Illinois Synod also offers opportunities to dig deeper into what faith means for daily life. The synod offers an annual retreat and three courses each year that are open to all who are interested. Some of these courses are offered through video conferences.

2021 Adult Faith Formation Winter Retreat, December 10-11
“The Book of Revelation for Today, Tomorrow, and Ever and Ever” with Rev. Walter F. Taylor Jr.

2022 “Understanding the Hebrew Bible” with Rev. Dr. Fred Niedner, select Saturdays in January-March via Zoom

Synodically Authorized Ministry

About Synodically Authorized Ministry

Synodically Authorized Ministry (SAM) is intended to assist the church in providing Word and Sacrament ministry to congregations when ELCA pastors are not available. The synod bishop, with the consent of the congregation, may authorize someone to serve in a particular congregation for a designated period of time.

The Central/Southern Illinois Synod utilizes Synodically Authorized Ministry throughout the synod as needed. Lay people who are members of an ELCA congregation who are authorized to serve have received preparation through the education courses of the synod (a three-year cycle of classes) and mentoring by ELCA pastors. Courses cover topics such as Old Testament, New Testament, Lutheran Confessions, preaching, and more. For more information about serving in Synodically Authorized Ministry and coursework required contact Pastor Ken Tegtmeier at  kft6582@gmail.com.
