Synod Staff
The synod staff manages the day-to-day functions and needs of congregations, rostered ministers, lay leaders, and the ministries they serve. The bishop is elected every six years, and the ministry staff serve by call to their positions. The support staff administrates daily operations of the synod office.

Bishop Busboom was elected by the 2023 Central/Southern Illinois Synod Assembly. Prior to his election, he served as lead pastor at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Springfield since 2011.

Synod Council
The Synod Council acts as trustee of responsibilities on behalf of the synod, meeting four times a year to discuss and recommend goals and budgets. The council is made up of the officers of the synod (bishop, vice president, treasurer, and secretary), ministry staff, deans and representatives from each of the six conferences, and additional at-large members elected by the Synod Assembly. At-large members of the Synod Council include youth and young adult representatives.
The synod also has several committees, which oversee specific programming and responsibilities for carrying forward the work and activities of the synod: Mission Support and Stewardship Education; New/Renewing Congregations; Social Ministry, Justice, and Advocacy; Global Mission; Leadership Support, and Adult Faith Formation. These are in addition to administrative committees, including Mutual Ministry, Nominating, Executive, Finance, Audit, Personnel, and Candidacy.
Synod Assembly
The Synod Assembly is the highest decision-making body of the synod. The assembly meets annually to receive reports, fill open positions by election, approve budgets, and enact policy and governance resolutions. It is made up of all rostered ministers in the synod and at least two representatives from each congregation.
